As the University of Alabama in Huntsville grew, the administration determined a need for additional classrooms on the north end of campus. The administration targeted Morton Hall because its design had fallen behind the standard of other classroom buildings. The Morton Hall project involved both a remodel and addition. With a busy campus road directly in front of the building, Bostick Landscape Architects (BLA) identified an opportunity to remove the road in favor of creating a true quad space between Frank Franz and Morton. This quad created space for student events from the dorm and the classroom building. This quad also acts as the northern termination of the Altenkirch Lawn.
On the south side of the existing Morton Hall, BLA created a new outdoor space. BLA created this space in coordination with the architect, who designed windows to give light to the building's basement and provided a new entry into the building. The plaza has an amphitheater feel for use as an outdoor classroom, becoming even more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. BLA led this space's design with grading and ADA access down the stairways, walls, and pergolas.
