In preparation for the 200th anniversary of the State of Alabama, the site where Alabama entered the Union was in dire need of an upgrade. Constitution Hall Park's grounds had become an assortment of various landscapes thrown together over the past 30 years, with no real comprehensive plan completed.
Bostick Landscape Architects collaborated with the architect to birth a master plan. The team removed the picket fences surrounding the site to create a new downtown park, opening the grounds to the public. BLA established a central lawn to unify all the buildings around the green.
The large pavilion received a facelift and a small pavilion was added on the other end of the grounds to terminate the views. This addition provided the park with locations for weddings, band performances, and receptions. BLA included a brick, four-square garden for a modern interpretation of a historic kitchen garden. A turf circle acts as the axis to move people in and out of the space, and a smaller lawn was kept unimproved for historical demonstrations during school field trips.
BLA completed all the hardscape, grading, drainage, and irrigation changes throughout the space. The plant palette for the landscape design was a modern take on historical plant material that would have been found 200 years ago with native plant materials that settlers might have transplanted from their yards.
