2017 Alabama Park and Recreation Facility of the Year
With an aging pool facility onsite, the City sought to create a state of the art facility to continue meeting the demand for competition pool space for a growing number of swimmers and adding a new therapy pool. A new competition pool allowed for continued use of the existing pool and took advantage of the available lake views. The state-of-the-art pool allows the City to host its summer swim meet and regional competitions.
To accommodate these events, Bostick Landscape Architects (BLA) designed terraces to take advantage of the lake views and provided shade with trees and sun-shades. BLA splashed waves of colored concrete through the terraces to bring both the pool and lake waters together.
The updated facility brought gathering areas to the front giving patrons safe spaces to wait for pickups. Food truck parking locations were designed integrally into a large parking island with grass pave to keep the space green when not in use. The facility can also easily block off the area to create a dedicated rally/ retail area.
