From an underused outdoor basketball court to a fun, community-wide amenity, the splash pad brought new life to this outdoor space. During the summer months, the community fully-engages with this space every day. The master plan and construction documents, including layout, grading, and design components, were all designed by Bostick Landscape Architects (BLA). BLA specified the splash pad elements with bulldogs to help embed the space into the North Huntsville community where Alabama A&M is situated, making it a larger part of the urban fabric.
The splash pad is situated within a three-sided courtyard making landscape space a premium but a must for softening the building. BLA used tall columnar evergreens around the site as well as ornamental grasses to mimic water movement. To maximize space for the pad, opportunities for shade from trees was limited. BLA placed fabric shade structures are throughout the splash pad along with picnic tables and benches. A one-foot strip of recycled tires allows for irrigation and rainwater to fall without washing the mulch into the splash pad, keeping it out of the circulatory system and minimizing maintenance requirements for the splash pad.
